After the ABA approved the law school`s online program application in May, St. Mary`s University leaders this week announced plans to advance the innovative program and recruit a cohort of students who will begin their studies online in the fall of 2022. In the fall of 2021, St. Mary`s Law became the first law school in the country to have a Juris Doctor program fully accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA). The university administration then announced plans to recruit an initial cohort of 25 students to begin the online program in the fall of 2022. When McAllen`s lawyer, Shiree Salinas (J.D. `90), first heard about St. Mary`s University`s School of Law`s innovative online JD program, she immediately wrote to the law school, sharing her enthusiasm. The ABA provides resources for lawyers, accredits law schools, establishes a code of ethics, and publishes academic and professional papers.
The ABA is also committed to passing laws and policies. Online students are welcome to visit campus and participate in on-campus activities or meet with faculty and staff at any time during their studies for support. Online students will also be able to complete internships, pro bono activities, and non-clinical experiential learning in the online environment. Faculty and staff are available to students online through virtual office hours, emails, and one-on-one Zoom meetings. Our faculty prides itself on an open-door policy that we would like to extend to our online cohort. Online courses are usually a mix of video recordings or live lectures, supplemented by readings and assessments that students can complete in their free time. But nothing is typical of education in 2022, as the coronavirus has forced a sudden migration to online learning with little time to prepare. The new online J.D. aims to support better access to the profession for those who are traditionally underrepresented, particularly in the Rio Grande Valley.
As an online student at St. Mary`s Law gives you access to the same opportunities and resources as a full-time student, including career guidance and guidance through the Office of Career Strategy, academic counselling through the Office of Law Success, and student services through the Office of Law Student Affairs. Currently, according to the ABA, Young Women students are allowed to complete up to 30 credit hours online in a traditional in-person program format. This kind of flexibility has allowed Young Women student Barbra Gazo, who is attending classes in San Antonio in the fall semester, to flourish. Kathryn Cantu, a second-year Young Women student in the traditional Young Women program at St. Mary`s, spent her first year taking online courses due to the pandemic and said she learned a new level of discipline and dedication to earn her law degree through online studies. She also won first place in the Jimi Derrick Moot Court Competition last school year and is a member of the moot court team. In addition to professors with virtual teaching experience in the master`s program, all full-time faculty at St. Mary`s Law received their online teaching certification after a challenging instructional design course to prepare for virtual teaching during the pandemic. International students are not automatically excluded from admission to the Young Women online program; However, the program is unlikely to meet the unique needs of international students, as time zones and synchronous class meetings differ. Rather, the goal of the program is to expand access to legal education in South Texas and provide national opportunities for those who would struggle to pursue a traditional personal JD.
